I know I don’t have a lot of time. If I may tell you a quick story. Recently, I was driving my daughter to school and she said to me, out of the blue, “Mama?” “Yes, baby?” She said, “I am the ugliest girl I know.” And I said, “Huh?” And she was like, “Yeah, I look like a boy with long hair.” And my brain went to, Oh my god, you are 6! Why? Where is this coming from? Who said this? Can I kick a 6-year-old’s ass? What? But I didn’t say anything. Instead, I went home and I made a power point presentation for her. And, in that presentation, were androgynous rock stars and artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their lives, and carry on, and wave their flag, and inspire the rest of us. These are artists like Michael Jackson, David bowie, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, Prince, Janis Joplin, and George Michael, Elton John — so many artists.

It was, her eyes glazed over. But then I said, “You know, I really want to know why you feel this way about yourself.” She said, “I look like a boy.” I said, “What do you think I look like?” She said, “Well you are beautiful.” I was like, “Well, thanks.” But, I said, “When people make fun of me, it’s, that’s what they use. They say that I look like a boy, or I am too masculine, too many opinions, my body is too strong.” And I said to her, “Do you see me growing my hair?” She said, “No mama.” I said, “Do you see me changing my body?” “No, mama.” “Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?” “No, ma.” “Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?” “Yes, mama.” “That’s right. So, baby, girl, we don’t change, we take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl. We help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty.”

And to all of the artists here, I am so inspired by all of you. Thank you for being your true selves. And for lighting the way for us. I am so inspired by you guys. There is so much rad shit happening now in music, and keep doing it. Keep shining. For the rest of us to see. And you, my darling girl, are beautiful. And I love you. Thank you, MTV. This is a really special night. Thank you, Ellen [DeGeneres], I couldn’t love you more. Thank you, guys. Good night.

On This Day in Pink History… 28th August 2006, U+Ur Hand was released

On This Day in Pink History… 28th August 2006, U+Ur Hand was released

Pink reportedly wanted “U + Ur Hand” to be the second single from I’m Not Dead, but “Who Knew” was released as the second and “U + Ur Hand” was instead released as the third. The single had success in Europe, reaching number ten in the UK, number four in Germany and number 11 in France; it peaked inside the top ten on the European Hot 100 Singles chart.

Pink wrote the song with Max Martin, Luke Gottwald, and Rami to mock the men who would flirt with her in clubs. The title refers to the line “looks like it’s just me and my hand tonight,” which was a phrase she’d heard guys using.

On This Day in Pink History… 26th August 2013, Pink received awards for a record breaking 18 shows in Melbourne, Australia

In summer 2013, Pink took the Truth About Love Tour to Australia and played a total of 46 shows in the country. 18 of those shows were at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. She is also the first artist to sell more than 250,000 tickets at the venue.

Pink previously set the record when she played 17 sold out shows at the Rod Laver Arena in 2009 on the Funhouse Tour.

In 2013, for the Truth About Love tour, Pink was awarded with a star at the venue’s entrance, a backstage plaque and a second Pink pole (the first one awarded on the Funhouse Tour). Door 18 at the venue was also painted pink.

PInkHistory Special: P!nk at the MTV Video Music Awards

Prepare to raise your glass to P!nk — the trailblazing pop star will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

The coveted prize, which honors an artist’s exceptional body of work, has previously gone to luminaries like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Madonna. This will be P!nk’s seventh VMA trophy — she won her first and second awards in 2001, for “Lady Marmalade,” and has since earned four more, for the inescapable hits “Get the Party Started,” “Stupid Girls,” and “Just Give Me A Reason.”

Ever since her debut in the heyday of early 2000s pop, P!nk stood out from her contemporaries thanks to her punk style, her powerful vocals, and her party-ready attitude. All of that is in full display in her stunning videography, which ranges from the western-themed “Trouble,” the emotionally raw “Just Like a Pill,” and the hilariously reckless “So What.”

She’s even brought several of her creations to life at the VMAs over the past 15 years, with four visually remarkable performances to date. From her 2002 performance of “Just Like a Pill,” to the raucous pillow fight she staged in 2008 for “So What,” to her gravity-defying acrobatics for “Sober” in 2009, she always has some surprises up her sleeve.

The VMAs will take place on the 27th August at The Forum in Inglewood, California, this year where P!nk will perform her new single What About Us (and there is word that she will add a few surprises too!) and also receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. So lets take this time too look back at P!nk’s appearances, performances and awards at previous VMA…

On This Day in Pink History… 22nd August 2008, So What music video was released

On This Day in Pink History… 22nd August 2008, So What music video was released

In 2008, Pink teamed up with Dave Meyers (who she also worked with for previous music videos such as There You Go, Most Girls, You Make Me Sick, Get The Party Started & Don’t Let Me Get Me), to shoot the new video for the debut single from her fifth studio album, Funhouse.

The video begins in a tattoo parlour, Pink is getting a tattoo of a red void mark on her arm across an existing tattoo before the scene cuts to Pink riding down Sunset Boulevard on a lawnmower and drinking alcohol. Pink is then shown entering Guitar Center browsing guitars. She pretends to play before attempting to smash it into the ground, but she is restrained by a store clerk which leads to them engaging in a fight. Pink is shown cutting down a tree engraved with her real name and her estranged husband’s names with a chainsaw. She cries on the chainsaw, while telling herself that she is all right, right before the tree falls and nearly crushes her neighbor. After this, Pink is sitting in a bar after losing her table to Jessica Simpson, accompanied by a man who is playing the drums out of glasses. The next scene goes to Pink on a motorbike, while a newly wedded couple in a car pull up beside her and wave and smile at her. Jealous and outraged at the happy newlyweds, Pink is shown throwing objects at the car and popping the blown up condoms used to decorate the vehicle, before climbing onto it and playfully (albeit violently) attacking the vehicle. Pink is then shown stripping on the red carpet, surrounded by photographers, she takes off her jacket to reveal her (blurred) nude body. The paparazzi all snap photos of her as she does choreography from Michael Jackson’s video for “Thriller” naked, but more akin to Austin Powers 2. Then while getting her hair done, her stylist applies hairspray, as Pink turns on her cigarette lighter, accidentally setting her hair on fire. Also shown are two men urinating in beer bottles, which they give to Pink, however Pink passes them to two guys walking past her. They drink it and then realizing what it is, spit it out in disgust. Finally, Pink is shown surrounded by men and women in their underwear engaging in a pillow fight. The video then cuts between all the scenes shown in the video before ending with Pink poking her tongue at the camera with her husband. Pink is also shown performing the song in concert near the end. Pink’s husband Carey Hart makes cameos throughout the video, such as a scene where they are talking as newspaper headlines flash behind them. Producer Butch Walker also makes a cameo. Pink has stated that Hart had not heard the song prior to arriving for the video shoot. The video was ranked on VH1 as the 3rd best music video of 2008 on the Top 40 Videos of 2008. On Facebook it was the second favorite video of 2008. The scene from the video where Pink’s hair is set on fire is censored on MTV UK and its sister channels. That scene is replaced with other short clips from the video

On This Day in Pink History… 11th August 2008 So What was released

So What is a song recorded by Pink for her fifth studio album, Funhouse in 2008. The song was written by Pink, Max Martin and Shellback while production was handled by Martin. So What was released as the albums debut single through LaFace and Jive Records. The lyrics are based on Pink’s separation from Carey Hart, which occurred six months prior to the released.

So What received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics; many praised it for its aggressive and empowering nature while others deemed it childish and bratty. The song was also successful commercially, topping the charts in several countries across Europe and Oceania and peaking within the top five worldwide. In the United States, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first number one hit on the chart as a solo artist and her second overall. So What also became her highest selling single in the United States, with sales of over four million downloads. The two-track single release also included the b-side Could’ve Had Everything.

Pink performed “So What” on MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 on November 6, 2008. The song was nominated for several awards, eventually winning the MTV Europe Music Award for the Most Addictive Track. So What is included in most setlists, including Funhouse Tour, Summer Carnival Tour and the Truth About Love Tour.
