On This Day in Pink History… 13th November 2011, Pink attended the Happy Feet 2 premiere

In 2011, the sequel to Happy Feet was released. Starring Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Pink.

Mumble the penguin has a problem: his son Erik, who is reluctant to dance, encounters The Mighty Sven, a penguin who can fly! Things get worse for Mumble when the world is shaken by powerful forces, causing him to brings together the penguin nations and their allies to set things right.

Pink replaces Brittany Murphy as Gloria, due to her death in 2009. Coincidentally, Pink sang a cover version of ‘Tell Me Something Good’ for the first film which can be heard in the opening credits.

The film grossed $64,006,466 in the United States along with $86,000,000 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $150,403,134.

On its opening weekend, Happy Feet Two earned $21,237,068 while playing on 3,606 screens. This was barely half of the $41,533,432 that the first Happy Feet made on its opening weekend in November 2006. Approximately 50% of Happy Feet Two ’s box-office take came from the 2,825 screens that showed it in 3D. Thus, when adjusted for ticket price inflation, Happy Feet Two achieved less than 45% of the attendance figures of its predecessor. Major box-office prediction websites were almost unanimously predicting an opening weekend of $35 million – $45 million, so Happy Feet Two ’s box-office performance has thus far been underwhelming. Among 2011’s animated films, Happy Feet Two ’s opening weekend ranks 8th. Kurt Orzeck of the Vancouver Sun has reported that “due to the poor performance of Happy Feet Two, 600 of the 700 employees at the Sydney-based Dr. D. Studios, the digital production studio behind the animated movie, have reportedly received their walking papers.”

On This Day in Pink History… 12th November 2010, Greatest Hits… So Far! was released

Greatest Hits… So Far! is the first greatest hits album released by Pink in celebration of her first decade on the music scene. The album track list differs depending on region and has four new tracks. It was the last material that Pink released under LaFace Records and Jive Records before moving to RCA Records.

There were two new singles released from the album, Raise Your Glass and Fuckin’ Perfect.

Originally, Pink was against releasing a greatest hits compilation, stating that she “was not inspired at all for this album… I always figured you need to be 60 or better, to have a little more past, to put one of these out. I fought it for years.” However, she changed her mind, realizing that “record companies can put out compilations without your permission” and concluded: “I wanted it done my way, so I jumped on board. Then, the less skeptical I felt about it, I started to feel a little proud.”

The album reached the top ten in album charts in many countries including: Australia (1), Germany (3), UK (5) and USA (5).

On This Day in Pink History… 11th November 2003, Try This was released

Try This is Pink’s third studio album released in November 2003 and was her final album released under Arista Records. Most of the tracks were produced and co-written by Rancid singer and guitarist Tim Armstrong, who Pink met at a Transplants video shoot. They ended up co-writing ten songs in a week when the Transplants were on tour with the Foo Fighters. Linda Perry also worked with Pink for Try This, and the album includes a collaboration with Peaches.

In 2006, Pink said that she was unhappy with the way the record label wanted her to make an album straight after the success of Missundaztood. She described the promotional campaign for the album as “an awful time. I was walking out of half my interviews crying. I just felt they were putting a quarter in the slot to watch the monkey dance.”

“I was kind of rebelling against the label on that one,” she said. “I was going: ‘You want a record? Fine, I’ll write 10 songs in a week for your fuckin’ record and you can press it up and put it out.'”

Despite being Pink’s lowest selling album, Try This debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200, and also reached the top ten on album charts in the UK (3), Canada (8), Australia (8) and Germany (2)

In 2004, Pink embarked on the Try This Tour in Europe and Australia to support the album. The show was recorded at Manchester Arena for her first live DVD.

On This Day in Pink History… 29th October 2012, Try was released

Try is the second single to be released from Pink’s 2012 album, The Truth About Love. The song was originally sung by GoNorthToGoSouth, a band fronted by Ben West and Michael Busbee.

The song received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who praised its production. Andrew Hampp of Billboard commented “With a melody reminiscent of ‘Whataya Want from Me,’ the 2009 hit she penned for Adam Lambert, the single already pairs well sonically with Pink’s catalog. Josh Langhoff of PopMatters called it “an ode to romantic persistence over crisp ‘Hysteria’ guitars.” John Murphy of musicOMH wrote that ‘Try’ “demonstrates that she has a voice that not enough people give her credit for. For want of a better phrase, it’s a full-on power ballad, with yet more references to love going wrong, and the sort of thing you can imagine someone like Kelly Clarkson pulling off in her sleep.” Amy Sciarretto of Pop Crush also saw similarities with Clarkson, writing, “It’s a belter with a soulful voice, and she sounds like Kelly Clarkson with this song. The midtempo track finds Pink mourning, lamenting and musing on a relationship that is breaking down at its core. It hurts, but this song is a salve over the wound.”

Dean Piper of Mirror Online wrote: “The stand out track and an obvious international radio hit is ‘Try.’ Think how big and fabulous ‘Who Knew’ was – ‘Try’ is on the same wavelength.” Sarah Rodman of Boston Globe called it a “keeper and an urging-to-victory battle cry,” Robert Copsey of Digital Spy described it as “a ballad of the stadium-filling, lighter-waving variety.” while Caryn Ganz of Spin called it a “breakup salve.” Lewis Corner of Digital Spy gave the song 4 out of possible 5, writing: “Although she may not be treading new ground sonically, her passionate tones and solid determination will continue her chart presence – and rightly so.” However, Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine was less positive, writing that “the midtempo ‘Try’ doesn’t push Pink forward either, and it’s marred by singsong lyrics.” Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune also shared the same thought, writing: “No one, not even Pink, can save lyrics such as these.”
