On This Day in Pink History… 29th October 2012, Try was released
Try is the second single to be released from Pink’s 2012 album, The Truth About Love. The song was originally sung by GoNorthToGoSouth, a band fronted by Ben West and Michael Busbee.
The song received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who praised its production. Andrew Hampp of Billboard commented “With a melody reminiscent of ‘Whataya Want from Me,’ the 2009 hit she penned for Adam Lambert, the single already pairs well sonically with Pink’s catalog. Josh Langhoff of PopMatters called it “an ode to romantic persistence over crisp ‘Hysteria’ guitars.” John Murphy of musicOMH wrote that ‘Try’ “demonstrates that she has a voice that not enough people give her credit for. For want of a better phrase, it’s a full-on power ballad, with yet more references to love going wrong, and the sort of thing you can imagine someone like Kelly Clarkson pulling off in her sleep.” Amy Sciarretto of Pop Crush also saw similarities with Clarkson, writing, “It’s a belter with a soulful voice, and she sounds like Kelly Clarkson with this song. The midtempo track finds Pink mourning, lamenting and musing on a relationship that is breaking down at its core. It hurts, but this song is a salve over the wound.”
Dean Piper of Mirror Online wrote: “The stand out track and an obvious international radio hit is ‘Try.’ Think how big and fabulous ‘Who Knew’ was – ‘Try’ is on the same wavelength.” Sarah Rodman of Boston Globe called it a “keeper and an urging-to-victory battle cry,” Robert Copsey of Digital Spy described it as “a ballad of the stadium-filling, lighter-waving variety.” while Caryn Ganz of Spin called it a “breakup salve.” Lewis Corner of Digital Spy gave the song 4 out of possible 5, writing: “Although she may not be treading new ground sonically, her passionate tones and solid determination will continue her chart presence – and rightly so.” However, Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine was less positive, writing that “the midtempo ‘Try’ doesn’t push Pink forward either, and it’s marred by singsong lyrics.” Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune also shared the same thought, writing: “No one, not even Pink, can save lyrics such as these.”

On This Day in Pink History… 27th October 2008, Funhouse album was released
Funhouse is Pink’s fifth studio album, released in 2008 by LaFace Records. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 180,000 copies in its first week. It reached number one in the album charts in six countries; Australia, Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland and UK. Funhouse has sold six million copies worldwide.
Pink wrote and recorded approximately 30 to 35 songs for Funhouse. “It’s like getting rid of your children: ‘I like that one too, but I’m going to let that one die,'” she said of choosing the album’s tracks. “The good thing now is that different countries want extra songs and B-sides, so there’s always a home for the other kids.” Pink traveled internationally to write and record the album, working with Eg White in London and with Max Martin in Stockholm. “It was really good to get out of my house and get away from my life. No distractions. No phones”, Pink said of her sessions outside the U.S.
Pink has stated that this album is her most vulnerable to date. Much of the album’s subject matter alludes to the fact that Moore had recently separated from her husband, Carey Hart. The first single, So What, opens with: “I guess I just lost my husband/I don’t know where he went”. Please Don’t Leave Me also addresses the split. The artist sums up its theme thus: “Okay, I’m an asshole, but love me anyway.” In Mean, she sings, “It was good in the beginning/but how did we get so mean?” The song that Moore is the most proud of is Crystal Ball. She said about the track: “I recorded it in one take and we didn’t mix it. It just went straight to master. It was all about a vibe and not about perfection or being polished. I just love that song and I loved recording it.” She wrote the song with Billy Mann, who also aided her with the songs Stupid Girls, Dear Mr. President and I’m Not Dead (all 2006), among others.
In It’s All Your Fault, Pink blames her lover for giving her hopes of a love relationship, then simply giving up on her. She proclaims in the lyrics “I conjure up the thought of being gone, but I’d probably even do that wrong.” In Glitter in the Air, Pink asks many questions such as, “Have you ever looked fear in the face and said I just don’t care?”, and “Have you ever hated yourself for staring at the phone?” Pink admits, “I still don’t have some of the answers to the questions I pose on this record. I’m still figuring it all out.”
The track Sober, which is the album’s second single, was written by Pink at a party hosted at her home, where everyone was drunk or drinking except for her, and she wanted them all to leave. She went to the beach and had a line in her head saying “How do I feel so good sober?”. Eventually it had nothing to do with alcohol but with identities. “How do I feel so good with just me, without anyone to lean on?”, Pink said in an interview.
Ave Mary A deals with world issues and problems. “One Foot Wrong” talks about an acidtrip that went wrong, but also has an underlying theme. “That song is also about losing control and how easy it is to lose the plot in life and teeter on the edge.”
Originally, Pink wanted to call her album Heartbreak Is a Motherfucker, but her record label declined because of a fear that offensive language would affect sales. She also said that she did not want the album to look like a break-up album; “There is a lot of that [break-up], but there is fun happening too and that’s why I named it Funhouse in the end.” Pink has also stated that she sees life as a carnival: “Clowns are supposed to be happy, but they are really scary. Carnivals are supposed to be fun, but really they are kind of creepy.” […] “and that’s like life to me, and love. Love is supposed to be fun, but it can sometimes be really scary. And the funhouse mirrors that make you look so distorted that you don’t recognize yourself and you ask yourself, ‘How did I get here? How do I get out of here?’ But, you think that you want to do it again. That is the same as love and life. It’s a metaphor for being in love and for life.” This also shows in the title track “Funhouse” where she tells that it used to be fun. “It’s about when the box you’re in doesn’t fit anymore, burn that fucker down and start a new one.”

On This Day in Pink History… 23rd October 2009, I Don’t Believe You was released
Pink explained on her website that, lyrically, the song is about pleading for reconciliation, and is her favourite song fromFunhouse “because it’s just so naked. It’s like taking a deep breathe and saying, ‘Here I am. Take me. Take your best shot’.” She went on to explain that: “The first thing that comes to my mind with I Don’t Believe You is me standing in the vocal booth listening… Actually in the control room listening to this song, tears running down my face, just like ‘fuck, really?’ It’s the vulnerable weak side of me that I don’t let out very often. And it’s [sighs], yeah it’s that song. And I love it, I love it. I just love it, it’s very near and dear to me.”
I Don’t Believe You is Pink’s single with the lowest peak in the United Kingdom only reaching number 62. It failed to reach the top forty due to physical single was cancelled.
The music video for I Don’t Believe You, directed by Sophie Muller, was shot in September 2009 in Los Angeles, California. The music video premiered on October 2009. The video is in black and white, it features Pink in the wedding dress she wore to her actual wedding to Carey Hart in 2006, and a diamond encrusted wedding gown as she searches for her lover, to no avail. Scenes include her lying down in the dress, rollerblading around what appears to be the inside of a church (The Los Angeles Theater), singing to an empty wedding dinnerroom, crying over an empty wedding album and singing to herself in front of the mirror.

On This Day in Pink History… 21st October 2001, Pink performed at United We Stand Concert
In 2001, Pink performed at United We Stand concert in Washington, DC. She performed My Vietnam and a cover of Janis Joplin’s Me and Bobby McGee.
Other performers included: ‘NSync, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson.
The concert was the third major concert held in tribute to the victims of theSeptember 11, 2001 attacks. The other two were held in New York City.

In 2013 I was contacted, along with other fans, by Letters To Pink with information about a project that was being started. Gypsy, a fan in Washington, was putting together a fan project of letters and gifts to Pink from fans all over the world.
She gave fans a step to get their thoughts, feelings and words to Pink. She spend a lot of hours and hard work to put together the book, letters and gifts to give to Pink during the performance.
A few weeks later, Pink tweeted a photo of the book, letters and gifts…
“Wow you gals and guys!!!!! Thank you so so so so much for these amazingly loving gifts and letters”
Gypsy carried on with the project in January 2014 and often did giveaway competitions on her Facebook and twitter pages.
In June 2014, sadly Gypsy passed away. I think I can speak for all fans included in this project by saying we are forever grateful for what Gypsy did for us, we will never forget the kindness she showed us. RIP Gypsy, you will be forever in the hearts of the P!nk family x
